Unconventional Design Ideas for Tiling

By | November 23, 2012

Tiles are a practical and elegant choice. They are great for withstanding moisture and they are easy to keep clean. They give the bathroom a sleek and elegant look and can complement many different styles from sleek and modern bathrooms to retro or vintage designs.

If you choose to use tiles to decorate your bathroom, why not use them in a beautiful and creative way? Tiles are a very versatile material and they can be adapted to suit whatever the creative vision might be for your bathroom. Rather than having a bathroom which looks the same as everyone else’s, you can create your own unique private sanctuary in your own home which you can escape to and pamper yourself.

Here are some creative tips and unconventional design ideas for using bathroom tiles in your remodelling project:

Create the Look of an Area Rug

This is a very creative look which can be used when you have a free standing claw-footed bathtub in the centre of a large bathroom. To create the look you need two different types of tiles, one with a decorative pattern on it such as a Moroccan or Oriental design. The other tiles should be plain, in a colour which picks up on or complements one of the colours within the other tiles.

Use the two different tiles to create the look of a “rug” on the floor which is made up of the decorative tile. You can even use another different type of tile as an accent colour or to create a border around the rug. Place the tub in the centre of the design for a dramatic and beautiful look.

Paint a Mural

One of the most beautiful showers I ever saw was in the home of two artists on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. She was a ceramic artist and he was a painter.  Their home was stuffed full of many gorgeous examples of their art and acted as a symbol of their unique inventiveness. The shower itself had a tiled wall which featured a full mural of a Great Blue Heron standing elegantly in a wetland wilderness. The nature theme was carried throughout the bathroom with other painted tiles and even small fish painted around the sink area.

Why not think about how your bathroom could be turned into a unique piece of art? There are many ways of painting tiles and sealing them so that they are waterproof, making it easier than you think to have a long-lasting bathroom masterpiece. If you are not artistically talented yourself, commission the services of a local painter to create the image that you envision.

Mosaics Aren’t Just for Walls

Using pattern and tiny mosaic tiles in the bathroom doesn’t only have to be restricted to the walls. Most people only create beautiful mosaics with small tiles on the walls of their bathrooms, as they feel that larger tiles are better for the floor.

However, you can create a stunning pattern with mosaic tiles which will make your floor the focus of attention. Not only will this create a lot of contrast, it is also a great non-slip flooring option.

Use Different Shapes and Sizes

Who says that all of your mosaic tiles have to be all the same size and shape? There are no rules when it comes to using tiles in your bathroom, so why not get a few different shapes and sizes of tiles and try creating your own geometric pattern with them. This technique might even save you money, because you can buy odd amounts of leftover tiles and use them in your own creative way.

You can turn square tiles on their sides to form diamond shapes, use longer rectangular tiles to make borders and use small brightly coloured tiles as accent pieces. Make sure that you sketch out your idea on paper first to verify that everything fits together well and then go about arranging your custom tile pattern on the wall. Also, don’t forget to account for the shape and size of the bathroom, as well as the appliances and other features that you will have to work around.

These are just a few creative and unconventional ways that you can use tile to decorate your bathroom.
